Planet
Kingdom of Sevia
The world that Silicon resides in has no name. Society here does not think from a world standpoint enough for there to be a universal term for the planet. If you told them that they could reach the stars then they would disregard you as an idiot who needs to start using his head. The study of astrology is a new one and not taken very seriously. The term "Earth" is thrown around to describe the collection of land people can travel to, but it is more street slang than anything. For the most part, people on this "Earth" focus more on the country they live in, if even that. It is uncommon to travel outside of your country and trading is a rare luxury.
Technology-wise, this Earth is in the middle of its industrial age. The idea of machinery is a new and fantastic one that people are experimenting with. Towns are polluted with the smoke of factories, while magic (another common feature of this world) is used to block the smoke from royal holy land. Architecture reflects a gothic revival period. In terms of real world history, this Earth is experiencing fashion trends and advancements similar to the Victorian age.

Kingdom of Sevia
The Kingdom of Sevia is the name given to the country where the majority of the story takes place. It is divided into twelve districts, which are numbered from one to twelve, and each district contains numerous towns and villages. They do not sacrifice their children to the capital for sport (atm). The Kingdom is ruled by the Sevian Family, and they have ruled for generations. It is believed that the royal family was chosen by the Creator and the religious populace see the royal family as prophets.
Presently, the Royal family is made-up of the King, Queen, and their son, Prince Lien.
The capital city of Sevia is designed in a circle. The kingdom is located at 12 o'clock with a wall guarding its perimeter and creating plenty of space for the grounds. A slope goes downward to the majority of town, where factories and residential buildings are often crammed side-by-side in a desperate fight for space. From 8 o'clock/4 o'clock and beyond the slope rises to a very tall hill, on top of which the upper class has built their various mansions. The upper class is guarded by a wall similar to the castle wall and looks down upon the lower class.
A straight road leads from the upper class section to the castle, while other roads are built as necessary and create a maze through the lower class districts. Large property is hard to come by in this day and age, as property holds split their original inheritance into halves and forths, then sell those and watch as those portions are further split. Even the upper class tends to own relatively small chunks of the property up there. There is some private property outside of the city walls owned by frugal families. Comyn Reed is one of the few citizens who owns a large chunk of land.

Surnames do not exist for the middle class and are considered an upper class treat. Surnames come from the name of the property or estate that you are associated with, so maids and servants are able to leech surnames from their employers. Having a surname is seen as a sign of power and worth. Comyn does not use his surname very much, despite its value in society.

All major religions on this Earth, no matter the country, have a similar emphasis on the value of a human soul. This is no mistake, as souls have a very obvious power and role in society. Many origin stories state that human souls are a gift from the Creator and give humans the ability to change the world around them, more so than any animal or plant could. A soul also gives off energy, which can be used to perform feats of "magia".
Because souls and magic are in the creation story and so deeply embedded in Sevia's religion, magic is not considered taboo. It is something the Creator gave humans the right to use, though they must use it responsibly. The primary religion, called Soulin, dictates plainly that humans should not use their magic to challenge the Creator. Things that the creator made for the benefit of humans are gifts and should not be altered heavily. Everything the creator created is absolute and perfect. Humans use their magic to create gifts for the Creator, not themselves: a church may be built with magic, but not your personal home. You may use magic to grow a forest and make the countryside beautiful to please the Creator, but should not grow a forest solely for personal gain.

In this world, alchemy is described as "using the soul's energy to modify and perfect existing items." Alchemists do not believe that the world around them is perfect and have vowed to use their human hands perfect it. This completely goes against the belief of the Soulin church, which is that everything created for humans is absolutely perfect as it is.
An alchemist very rarely creates from scratch. They modify or combine existing things to make better things. Extreme alchemists use their soul energy to modify human bodies to be closer to "perfect". The 'worst' of alchemists even attempt to create human bodies and souls with their own hands.
